Anne Dary
Commissaire
Sculpter (faire à l'atelier) draws through the works of about sixty French artists or artists living in France, the filiations, restarts and extensions that have been made into sculptures since the end of the 80s. A prominent place is given to work in the workshop, a place of doing, but also of thought, experimentation and research. That the sculptor assumes the realization of his works, relying on the mastery of a traditional or artisanal technique – doing so claims then its know-how – or by inventing new processes, or that he prefers to surround himself with experts sometimes from outsidefield of art, the confrontation with matter is at the heart of his practice. The reader will walk through the book as he has walked through the exhibition, from work to work, without thematic, stylistic or generational barriers, from modeling clay to granite, from plastic to plant, from the figure to the curve, from fiction to abstraction, allowing oneself to be surprised by chance, the accident and other contiguous miracles, as it happens in the space of the workshop.
