Born in 1968 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA,3,4 she moved to New York in the 1980s to study fine arts. She is a graduate of the Cooper Union, but is mainly dedicated to music.
Terre Thaemlitz was originally an American house music pianist and disc jockey, performing at gay New York balls and queer clubs. She has been dedicated to ambient music since the mid-1990s, and is considered one of the leading American artists, theorists, essayists, and lecturers on ambient and electroacoustic musics3,9. She also created a music label, Comatonse Recordings, in 19925. She left New York in 1997 for California, then moved to Japan in 2001.
In 2017, Terre Thaemlitz is one of the artists selected for the documenta exhibition in Kassel, Germany and Athens. She also performed in France, as in 2000 at the Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou.
