Marcel Dzama, an internationally renowned Canadian artist, has been developing a rich and dreamlike body of work since the late 1990s, in which drawing and film are central to his practice.
A great admirer and connoisseur of early cinema, Marcel Dzama is also, more broadly, curious about a variety of worlds: the Surrealist and Dadaist spirit, the beginnings of modernism, pop culture, illustration, underground music, and so on. These references feed into a world of fantasy that is instantly recognisable, by turns marvellous, cruel, poetic or political.
Echoing Marcel Dzama’s current exhibition at La Criée centre d’art contemporain in Rennes, this evening offers the chance to discover a selection of seven of the artist’s films, from his early days to the present, rarely or never before shown in France. They will be introduced by Sophie Kaplan, director of the art centre and curator of the exhibition.
