As part of its artistic cycle “Alors que j'écoutais moi aussi [...]” (As I listened too...) and a unique partnership with Inrap (the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research), La Criée has invited artist Clémence Estève to devise a creative and educational project at Torigné elementary school in connection with the archaeological excavation site at the Hôtel Dieu, Îlot de la Cochardière in Rennes.

About

This construction site offers archaeologists from the Inrap the opportunity to study the northern part of Condate, to uncover remains of the ancient city, and particularly a necropolis from the Late Antiquity period (4th and 5th centuries).

For her research and creation project, Clémence Estève proposed to "remix" the remains discovered on the excavation site by inviting a class of 4th-grade students to imagine the possible discrepancies between the exhumed objects and their possible or real uses. The risk of error that archaeologists try to avoid through scientific analysis, Clémence Estève has turned into an artistic experimentation space.

Starting from the study of the Hôtel Dieu excavation site and the scientific information transmitted by the Inrap archaeologists, Clémence Estève designed with the students "parasitic elements" (a piece of information, a gesture, an object), in order to mix reality and fiction and produce multiple narratives.

By combining art and archaeology, this innovative project seeks to link understanding of the world and humans, and the development of creativity for each child. It offers the opportunity to cross disciplinary boundaries, to reveal the singularity and perhaps the porosity of scientific and artistic languages. The project includes the practice of artistic and cultural venues, visits to the excavation site, and times for meeting and exchanging with archaeology professionals. It also extends beyond the school with the dissemination of the produced works in the Blosne neighborhood and an exhibition at the Hôtel Pasteur in Rennes.
